Minecraft World Size & Distance Calculator
A Java world is almost 60,000 km wide, about seven times the surface of the Earth. Convert any real place into blocks, chunks and maps, or measure how far it is between two coordinates and how long the trip takes.
- 1 block = 1 metre
- Real place → blocks, chunks, maps
- Distance & travel time
Real place → Minecraft
Enter the size of a real place in kilometres to see how big it is at 1 block = 1 metre. The calculator uses the rectangle around the place, so coastlines and odd shapes cover a little less.

Fits inside the world border: Yes. Height is the limit: the world is only 384 blocks tall.

At CartoVoxel's 25 km² per world, this place needs about 4 worlds. Start with the part you care about most.

How to use it
Three ways to measure a Minecraft world
- 01
Size up a real place
Pick an example or enter the width and length of a park, campus or city in kilometres. The calculator shows the blocks, chunks, region files and maps it takes at 1 block = 1 metre.
- 02
Measure between two points
Press F3 in game, copy the coordinates of two places and paste them in. You get the straight-line distance, the direction to head and the distance through the Nether.
- 03
Plan the trip
Compare travel times on foot, by boat, on a horse or with an elytra, and decide whether a Nether highway or an ice-boat road is worth building.
FAQ
Minecraft world size questions
How big is a Minecraft world?
In Java Edition the world border sits 29,999,984 blocks from the centre in every direction, so the playable world is 59,999,968 blocks across. At 1 block = 1 metre that is about 60,000 km wide and 3.6 billion km² in area, roughly seven times the surface of the Earth. Terrain is only generated where players go, so a save file stays small until you explore.
How big is a Minecraft block in real life?
A block is treated as one cubic metre. The player is 1.8 blocks tall and doors are two blocks high, which matches real proportions closely. CartoVoxel uses the same scale, so a 500-metre street becomes 500 blocks.
Could the whole Earth fit in Minecraft at 1:1?
Horizontally, yes: the Earth is about 40,075 km around the equator and 20,004 km from pole to pole, both shorter than the 60,000 km Java world. Vertically, no: the Overworld is only 384 blocks tall, while Mount Everest is 8,849 m high. Projects that rebuild the planet at 1:1, such as Build the Earth, rely on mods to get around the height limit.
How long does it take to walk across a Minecraft world?
Walking edge to edge without stopping takes about 161 days at 4.317 blocks per second; sprinting takes about 124 days. With an elytra and rockets it is still about 21 days, and a boat on blue ice does it in roughly 10.
Is a Bedrock world the same size?
The height range, Y −64 to 319, is the same in both editions since 1.18. Bedrock has no /worldborder command and its far limits behave differently, so the border, width and travel figures on this page are for Java Edition.
How does the distance calculator work?
It measures the straight line between the two X and Z coordinates and ignores height. The Nether figure divides that distance by 8, which is how much shorter the same trip is if you travel through linked Nether portals.
How big an area can CartoVoxel turn into a world?
Up to 25 km² per world, for example 5 × 5 km, generated from real map data at 1 block = 1 metre for Java or Bedrock. Larger places can be split into several worlds.
