  • 16 colours + 6 formats
  • MOTD, § text and /tellraw
  • Bedrock-only colours listed

All Minecraft color codes

Java Edition colours with their § code, the name used in JSON text and the foreground hex value. Use & instead of § wherever a plugin converts it.

Bedrock-only colour codes

Bedrock Edition adds these material colours. Because §m and §n are colours there, strikethrough and underline only work in Java Edition.

How to use it

Coloured text for chat, signs and your server list

  1. 01

Write your text with & codes

Type a colour or format code before the words it should change, or click the buttons to insert them. A colour code resets bold, italic and other formats, so add formats after the colour.

  2. 02

    Check the preview

The dark preview shows the colours, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and the flickering obfuscated effect as Minecraft draws them.

  3. 03

    Copy the right format

Paste the MOTD line into server.properties and restart the server, run the /tellraw command in a Java world, or use the & version with a chat plugin.

FAQ

Minecraft color code questions

What is the difference between § and & codes?

Minecraft itself uses the section sign (§) followed by a code. The & version is a convention of server plugins such as EssentialsX, which turn &6 into §6 so players can type colours without the § key.

How do I make a coloured MOTD for my server?

Copy the server.properties line from this page, replace the existing motd= line in your server.properties file and restart the server. The § sign is written as \u00A7 so the file stays readable, and \n starts the second line.

Can I type colour codes in vanilla Java chat?

No. Java Edition does not let players type § in chat. Use /tellraw with JSON text in a world with commands enabled, or a server plugin that understands & codes.

Why don't strikethrough and underline work on Bedrock?

In Bedrock Edition §m and §n are colour codes (material_redstone and material_copper), so those two formats are Java-only. Bold, italic and obfuscated work in both editions.

Can I use hex colours?

In Java Edition JSON text, such as /tellraw, accepts "color": "#RRGGBB" for any colour. The § and & codes only cover the 16 named colours listed here.

What does &k do?

It obfuscates the text: every character keeps changing to a random one of the same width, which is often used for a mystery or glitch effect in server names.
