How to build it

From a picture to a Minecraft build in three steps

  1. 01

Pick an image and a size

Simple images with big shapes and few colours work best. 32–64 blocks wide is a good start for survival; creative builds can go up to 256.

  2. 02

Choose the blocks you can get

Concrete gives the brightest colours, wool is cheap early on, and terracotta adds muted skin and earth tones. Untick anything you do not have.

  3. 03

    Gather the materials and build

Use the material list to collect blocks, then follow the preview row by row, or run the .mcfunction file in a Java creative world to place everything at once.

FAQ

Minecraft pixel art questions

Which blocks are best for pixel art?

Concrete has the cleanest, brightest colours. Wool is cheaper and easy to get from sheep. Terracotta covers muted browns, pinks and skin tones. Mixing the three gives the most accurate result.

How big should my pixel art be?

For a portrait or logo 32 to 64 blocks wide is usually enough to recognise it. Larger images keep more detail but need many more blocks; the block count updates as you move the slider.

What does dithering do?

Dithering spreads the colour error to neighbouring blocks, so gradients look smoother from a distance. Turn it off for logos, sprites and flat colours, where it only adds noise.

How do I use the .mcfunction file?

Create a datapack in your Java world, put the file in data/<namespace>/function, run /reload, stand where the bottom-left corner should be and run /function <namespace>:<file name>. Commands must be enabled.

Does it work for Bedrock Edition?

The preview and the material list work for every edition. The .mcfunction export uses Java block IDs, so on Bedrock build by hand from the preview.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is resized and converted in your browser and never sent to a server.
